Madrid 2020: Lessons to be learned from London 2012 debrief

November 16 – The Madrid 2020 bid team is sitting in on the London 2012 debrief in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil taking notes on the success story of the last summer Games.
Heading the Spanish delegation is Olympic sailing champion, Theresa Zabell, who said, “Witnessing the transfer of knowledge from London’s wonderful Olympics to the much-anticipated Games in Rio will be fascinating.
“We can’t wait. Our dream is to host the Olympics in 2020 and we’ll be able to collect an invaluable insight in how best to adapt our own project.”
Madrid like the other two 2020 bid cities, Istanbul and Tokyo are putting the final touches on their bid plans as the deadline looms January 7th for all three to hand in to the IOC their concrete proposals.
The Spanish bid has most of its needed infrastructure in place and has a solid background of hosting successful elite level sports events and is the home to the popular football team Real Madrid.
The London debrief, which is being led by London Games Organising Committee (LOCOG) Chairman Sebastian Coe, will share valuable information for the upcoming hosts of Sochi 2014, Rio 2016 and PyeongChang 2018.
IOC chief, Dr. Jacques Rogge, was set to attend however has had to cancel according to doctor's orders following his recent hip replacement surgery.
The final host city for 2020 will be voted by the IOC in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 7th, 2013.
