October 4 - Japan’s capital city Tokyo is bidding to host to the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games. That bid got a major boost and commercial support when All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (ANA) was named as the sixth Official Bid Partner.
ANA is one of the largest airlines in the Asia-Pacific region. ANA joins the previously announced sponsors and partners SICS, DESCENTE, JTB, Mizuno Corporation and Kinki Nippon Tourist. The alliance is considered a positive step for world’s most forward-thinking city’s bid to host the world games.
The partnership, which has been in the works for a little while, was announced by Tsunekazu Takeda, IOC member and president of the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee and the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC). Takeda said having one of Japan’s biggest transportations companies on board will certainly help Tokyo’s bid.
The announcement is only one of many recent such events which further underscore the Japanese interest and passionate support for hosting the 2020 games. More announcements of support from a cross section of Japanese industry and business is expected.
President Takeda extended heartfelt thanks to ANA and pledged to work closely with the company, existing partners and others who will come on board in the future. He said the spirit of cooperation will show the International Olympic Committee (IOC) why Tokyo is the place for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
ANA also sponsors a number of elite level athletes and one of them, Ai Fukuhara, claimed silver at the London 2012 Games with the team in table tennis marking the first medal in the sport.
In a press release issued by the Tokyo 2020 Olympics committee, Fukuhara said, “I have been blessed to compete at three consecutive Olympic Games and I have learned first-hand how much courage and inspiration the Games provide to all people. If Tokyo hosts the 2020 Games, we will be able to witness the Olympic Games’ excitement in person. I would love to see Tokyo host the 2020 Games as it will inspire children across the country.”
ANA’s support means the company is now the official airline partner or the JOC. The company will also assist Japan’s athletes in other international sporting events as well as promote the Olympic games bid effort at home and abroad.
The IOC will meet Sept. 7, 2013 in Buenos Aires, Argentina to conduct the final vote for the 2020 Games host city.
