August 28 – A top level team from the Istanbul 2020 Olympic bid have returned back in London to attend the Paralympics to pursue their observer program and back Team Turkey as they kick off tomorrow with the biggest edition ever.
Hasan Arat, Istanbul businessman and head of the Istanbul 2020 bid, commented, “My Istanbul 2020 colleagues and I have already been so impressed by LOCOG’s preparation and the organisational successes of the 2012 Olympic Games.
“There were many lessons we took home with us. Now we are here to focus on how Istanbul 2020 Games organisers would need to transition to the Paralympic Games and the way in which a long-term legacy of accessibility and inclusion can be left for the local communities in Istanbul.
“We will also study the positive impact that the Paralympic Games could have in Turkey on the national attitude to people with a disability.”
“There is significant national support at home for Turkey’s Paralympians. It will be an honour to be able to support them here in person.
“These incredible athletes are a powerful inspiration to the Istanbul 2020 Bid Committee as we seek to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to Turkey for the first time ever.”
Arat will be joined by bid director, Ali Kiremitçioğlu, and they will lead the delegation that will be taking notes and visiting as many venues as possible to understand the management of the Paralympic Games. One thing that is key in their target is putting together a bid file that will leave the sustainable legacy of a barrier free environment.
Team Turkey will participate in 10 sports with an equipe of 70 Olympians, the majority will be participating in archery, basketball and football.
Istanbul is competing against Tokyo and Madrid to host the 2020 summer Games. The final decision will be taken at the IOC session on September 7, 2013 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
