PyeongChang 2018: Paralympic plans kick off with IPC orientation seminar

July 3 – The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is busy working on the preparations for the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Games with an orientation seminar being held in the heart of the Olympic Family area at the Alpensia Resort in the host city.

 A good 70 delegates were present for the seminar that was led by Chief Executive Officer Xavier Gonzalez, Paralympic Games Integration Director Thanos Kostopoulos and Head of Knowledge Management Apostolos Rigas.

Gonzalez said, “The IPC Orientation Seminar is the first action of a long-term comprehensive Knowledge Management programme that is now available from the IPC for the Paralympic Games organizers.

“It includes a series of educational workshops, observer’s programmes, simulations and consulting, all designed and executed within the Paralympic Excellence Programme, in co-operation with the IPC Academy.”

The IPC team met with PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Organizing Committee (POCOG), the Korean Paralympic Committee staff and local government officials.

POCOG Vice-President and Secretary General, Dong Hoo Moon, Man Hee Shin, Director General of Gangwon Province Headquarters, Korean Paralympic Committee Secretary General, Jin Ho Son, and a number of national federations and representatives from Gangwon province were all participating at the meeting.

The two day seminar took place on July 2-3 and informed them about key timelines and how to plan for an inclusive Winter Games. Key objectives were highlighted such as accessibility, Games schedules and legacy opportunities.

As a keynote, POCOG outlined their Paralympic Games bid commitments and presented their organizational structure for the Paralympic Games.

The PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games will be held from 9-18 March, 2018 and more than 50 countries are expected to send a total of around 600 athletes to compete in five sports on the program.
