Sochi 2014: Russia celebrates Olympic Day with a London 2012 theme

June 25 – Celebrations took place at Moscow, Sochi and all over Russia as part of the Olympic Day commemoration featuring sport, educational and cultural events. The Russian national Olympic committee together with the Moscow government organized the party in the city.

The focal point of the events was the upcoming Games in London that are just a month away and the Olympians that will be on the team representing Russia.

The "Luzhniki' Alley near the big sports arena, a good 35 venues were set up to resemble a sports village. Guests were able to play basketball, volleyball and football, hit the climbing wall, learn to shoot from a bow, trampoline, play chess with a well-known grandmaster, run on jolly-jumpers and even learn to hit a baseball. The children were entertained by an animation team.

The "Luzhniki" guests also got to see a rare treat, a football game between the winter Olympic champions and the summer Olympic champions.

Over in the host city Sochi, the day kicked off with an "Olympic warm up" and then beach football, volleyball and street ball competitions.

Olympic champion Andrei Chemerkin and prize winners of the Games Aleksey Voevoda and Elena Prokhorova did master classes in bench pressing, arm wrestling and athletics.

For lighter entertainment there was a fun "Olympic quiz", a relay on roller skates, tug-of-war competitions and other activities.

Other events took place all over Russia in stadiums, parks, children’s health camps and central parks and physical education and sport managers, Olympic champions and well known athletes were out to meet and interact with the participants.
