TAMPA: Madrid Mayor Ana Botella presented the eleventh edition of the Mutua Madrid Open today with four of the top tennis players in the world circuit in town to play for the first time on a blue clay court.
The event takes place May 4-13 and features top names in tennis such as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray at the Caja Mágica (the Magic Box) venue. Serbian player Djokovic won the competition last year in 2011. This year there will be 48 of the world’s top tennis players in the competition.
At the presentation ceremony the Mayor was joined by Alejandro Blanco, President of the Spanish Olympic Committee (SOC); Ion Tiriac and Manolo Santana, the Promoter of the Mutua Madrid Open and its Director; Jaime Montalvo, Vice-president of Mutua Madrileña, and tennis players Venus Williams and Fernando Verdasco.
Botella noted that this tournament “places Madrid at the circuit of great world events such as the Paris, Rome, Shanghai, Montreal and Monte Carlo competitions”.
Organizers are expecting thirty-five million people to tune in on television to watch the matches, 185,000 spectators are going to be in attendance and the event will generate an advertising impact of 24 million euro with 75% on an international level.
The Mayor added, “This is an extraordinary occasion to promote Madrid’s image and a unique opportunity to present the city’s efforts and willingness to host the Olympic Games. Madrid 2020 will be the best Games in history, since they are the result of the efforts, constancy and strength of all of us.
“The Mutua Madrid Open is one of the greatest exponents of the Madrid 2020 Bid.”
Madrid is competing against four other cities Baku, Doha, Istanbul, and Tokyo to host the summer Games.
In September of 2013 the final host will be decided at the IOC session in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
