Sochi 2014: Cultural Olympiad set to open doors for new talent

TAMPA: The Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad has started the launch of the first national classic music artists’ competition under the patronage of world renowned musician and Games’ Ambassador Yuri Bashmet.

The contest will search for young musicians, between the ages of 9 and 22, to become part of the All-Russian Youth Orchestra that will debut in Sochi in November 2012, as a part of the Cultural Olympiad.

Bashmet said, "I am sure that the All-Russian Youth Orchestra will become a great launchpad for young musicians, helping them to fully unleash their talent.

“I will lead and manage the team and will personally monitor all stages and qualifying rounds of the competition.

“I hope that during the Olympic Games in Sochi our orchestra will display to the world a range of new talents,playing a significant role in the future of Russian culture".

Contestants from children's music schools, children's art schools as well as special secondary music schools and colleges can take part in the contest. Phase one will cover all the Federal Regions of Russia and candidates can also send a DVD of their performance. The categories of the contest will comprise 11 categories (violin, alto, cello, double bass, clarinet, oboe, flute, bassoon, trumpet, French horn and trombone) and be divided into several stages.

In November the semi-finals will take place in Moscow and 120 participants will be chosen then the final stage will move to the Olympic host city Sochi.

Then 60 musicians will create the first All-Russian Youth Orchestra that will perform at big gala concerts in Sochi and Moscow.
