Doha 2020: GCC NOC heads all behind bringing Games to the Middle East

TAMPA: In a meeting held this week in Jeddah the presidents of the national Olympic committees (NOC) of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) of the Arab states have confirmed their full support for the Doha 2020 bid to bring the Olympics to the Middle East for the first time.

Prince Nawaf bin Faisal, head of KSA Youth Welfare, chaired the meeting and in attendance were Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, secretary general of the QOC, Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, chief of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, Sheikh Talal Al-Fahad Al-Subah, who represented the head of the Kuwait Olympic Committee, Yousef Yaqoub Al-Serkaal, UAE Olympic Committee vice-president, and Eng. Habib Makki, Oman Olympic Committee vice-president.

A number of decisions were also taken to support the GCC Sports Joint Action including KSA to host the second GCC Beach Games to be held in November 2012 and the inaugural GCC Sports and Environment Conference that will be held in Qatar in 2013.

Qatar was represented at the meeting by the secretary general as well as Yousef Al-Saei, QOC executive board member, Khaleel Al-Jaber, QOC Sports Affairs Department director, Khalifa Al-Suwaidi, head of Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation, Fisal Al-Mansouri, in charge of QOC Public Relations and Marketing Department and Tareq Saeed Al-Ali, head of QOC Technical Affairs.

Doha is looking to compound on the legacy of sports in the region after Qatar won the FIFA World Cup for 2022 and bring the Olympics here also. The city is running against Baku, Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo.

The final decision will be voted at the IOC session in Buenos Aires on September 7th 2013.
