TAMPA: The Association of the National Olympic Committees (ANOC) has confirmed that Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al Sabah will serve as interim leader in the wake of the sudden resignation of longtime chief, Mario Vazquez Rana, last week. Al Sabah is the president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and currently serves ANOC as vice-president.

Following a meeting this weekend of the vice-presidents and the ANOC board in Bangkok, ANOC Secretary General, Gunilla Lindberg, sent an official letter to International Olympic Committee (IOC) president, Dr. Jacques Rogge, informing him that Al Sabah would carry on as chief of the organization until the General Assembly where he should be approved to continue in this capacity until 2014.

The statement confirms:

“The four VPs and the EC stressed out they continue to uphold the democratic values of ANOC, allowing every NOC their voice and abide by decision of the majority, be it in the General  Assembly or by the powers mandated the Executive Council.

All four vice presidents and members of the EC paid recognition to Mario Vazquez Rana, and the important role Mario Vasquez Rana, the founding president of ANOC played in developing the organization which now represents 204 NOCs.”

The document was then signed by General Lassana Palenfo (ACNOA), Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al Sabah (OCA), Patrick Hickey (EOC), and Dr. Robin Mitchell (Oceania) and Lindberg as SG of the association.

The General Assembly for ANOC is slated to be held in Moscow, Russia April 10-17th next month.
