TAMPA: The man widely seen as the clinching force behind the Sochi 2014 bid is back in the president's chair in Russia after elections this weekend.

Vladimir Putin, currently serving as Prime Minister, won elections on Sunday and will return to his former position and have the honor of opening the first Russian winter Games in less than two years time. However he would have to be re-elected for another term to open the 2018 FIFA World Cup set to be staged around the nation.

This will make his third term as President after already completing eight years in the position.

As reported by the BBC preliminary results show Putin taking over 63% of the vote however some opposition groups have raised protests.

During his victory speech Putin appeared notably moved by the win speaking from a stage in the Red Square.

Moscow will welcome the National Olympic Committees in a little over a month's time as the ANOC general assembly will be held in the Russian capital city.
