TAMPA: Spanish Olympic Committee head and bid chief, Alejandro Blanco, together with Óscar Campillo, Director of Spanish sports newspaper, Marca, honoured over 50 Barcelona Olympians at the NOC headquarters.

The Spanish Olympic medallists pronounced their support for the 2020 bid after the prior two campaigns of 2012 and 2016.

“Our Government is aware of the fact that bringing the Games to Madrid is not an expense, but a long-term investment in legacy, enthusiasm and employment

Gold medal sailor and international relations ceo for the Madrid 2020 bid, Theresa Zabell, noted, “Our Government is aware of the fact that bringing the Games to Madrid is not an expense, but a long-term investment in legacy, enthusiasm and employment.”

Alfonso Pérez, gold medal footballer said, “The time has come, but not only for Madrid. Hosting the Games once more would be a great opportunity for Spain. In fact, we are ready for it, as we have already shown.”

“I think Madrid has everything. It’s a wonderful city which deserve the Olympic Games,” added Conchita Martínez, tennis silver medallist who won in Barcelona together with Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in tennis doubles.

“It will always have my support”, she said. “I wish this dream comes true so in 2040 some other athletes can celebrate the success as we are doing today.”

Madrid will be competing against Baku, Doha, Istanbul and Tokyo to win the 2020 summer Games. The final decision will be taken in September 2013 at the IOC session in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
