TAMPA: After the 2012 and 2016 races Madrid is now hoping to get third time lucky.

Alejandro Blanco, President of the Spanish Olympic Committee and head of the Madrid 2020 Organization, led the bid team to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters to submit the applicant files. He was accompanied by Theresa Zabell, International Relations CEO, Raúl Chapado, Sports General Director, and Manuel Cano, National Press Manager.

They met this morning with Jacqueline Barrett, IOC Head of Bid Cities Relations, to hand over the  80 bilingual copies (in English and Spanish) of the documentation –including the Government letters of guarantee.

Blanco said, “We were received by Jacqueline Barrett, who took a look at the dossier that answers all questions posed by the Olympic Committee and that I believe will make the Madrid project come true.

“This dossier has been thoroughly analyzed, well structured and well presented”.

He added, “Spain is going through difficult economic moments, but in times of crisis there are two possible solutions –we can just hide or step forward and say ‘here I am with this bid’. I believe this is good for the city and for the country –we are ready to host a high-level Olympics.”

Theresa Zabell noted “today is a milestone day and the applicant files combine the positive aspects from 2012 and 2016, with new, intelligent and innovative elements”.

“It is not only that Madrid wishes to host the Olympic Games; I do believe Madrid needs them” stated Zabell, who underlined that “now more than ever before the capital of Spain will give its very best”.

Madrid is running against Baku, Doha, Istanbul and Tokyo in the race for the 2020 Olympics. It is expected later today that Rome will officially announce that the Italian government has decided against supporting the bid and they will likely fall out of the race.

The final decision will be taken on September 7th of 2013 in Buenos Aires, Argentina at the IOC session.
