Special Olympics World Winter Games 2013 mark one year countdown

TAMPA:  The PyeongChang 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games will take off and just one year’s time in the host city for the next Asian winter Olympiad.

The event will take place from January 26th 2013 until February 6th, for 12 days at PyeongChang and Gangneung in Gangwon Province. The sports events will take place in the future venues for the 2018 Olympics.

The Games are backed by support from a number of corporations and universities namely Cheil Textile, Seoul National University, Korea University, and Sangmyung University who have all signed a MOU with the 2013 Games Organizing Committee.

A charity gala was held today at the Grand Hilton in Seoul with Dr. Timothy Shriver, ceo and chairman of Special Olympics, Na Kyung Won, chair of the PyeongChang 2013 organizing committee, Bae Jae Hyun, director of Cheil Textile, Park Myung Jin, vice chancellor of the Seoul National University, Yoon Young Sub, vice chancellor of External Relations, Kang Tae Bum, chancellor of the Sangmyung University, and Lee Gwang Ja, chancellor of the Seoul Women’s University.

Chairman Na said, “Today’s event will become a stepping stone for our successful hosting of the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games, and we will devote our best efforts to prepare for an incredible global event, where everyone including our World Games sponsors, Korean citizens and all the people around the world can join together and celebrate in a spirit of unity.”

A sponsor summit was also held to inform partners of the preparations for the Games.  Special Olympics also are backed by the support of global corporate sponsors including The Coca-Cola Company, Procter & Gamble, Hilton Worldwide, Mattel and Lions Club International. 

Also the Special Happy Matching Program was presented which is a national project in Korea partnered with NHN’s Happybean Foundation which supports the 2013 Games’ participating athletes coming from 120 countries around the world.
