TAMPA: The Madrid 2020 bid got a major boost today with the launch of the new look for the campaign.

Madrid mayor Anna Botella and President of the Spanish Olympic Committee and chief of the Madrid 2020 bid, Alejandro Blanco, unveiled the new team, graphic branding, and website.

Approximately 500 people were attending the launch in the Spanish capital city.

All three Spanish IOC members were present - Juan Antonio Samarach, Marisol Casado, Jose Perurena and HRH Infanta Pilar de Borbón, honorary IOC member.

The bid team now includes six Olympians –Theresa Zabell, Alfonso Rodríguez de Sadia, Raúl Chapado, Virginia Ramírez, Rafa Pascual and Rodrigo Garza.

Student designer Luis Peiret Arasanz came up with the winning logo featuring the Alcala Gate depicting the five arches bringing together the five parts of the world and the new website will be hosted on the domain at www.madrid2020.es

Tennis star, Virginia Ruano, owner of ten Grand Slam titles and two silver Olympic medals, together with Gervasio Deferr, Spain's most succesful gymnast with two gold medals at Sydney and Athens and a silver from Beijing, hosted the event.

Bid president Blanco said, "Madrid is applying to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the third consecutive time showing a great deal of eagerness and counting on the experience acquired in previous bids.

"Achieving the Games will represent a source of economic development that will imply boosting the industrial and commercial activity, creating employments, attracting investors, promoting tourism and improving the city’s image.

"We will implement a strategy with greater international outreach to transmit the entire world the passion our country has for sports."

The new bid team will include six Olympians –Theresa Zabell, double gold medal in sailing, as CEO of International Relations; Alfonso Rodríguez de Sadia, Olympic gymnast will be Marketing and Communications Director; Raul Chapado, athletics participant in Athens, has been appointed for the second time as Sports Director; Rodrigo Garza, silver medal with the hockey team in Beijing, will be responsible for Operations; Rafa Pascual, two times Olympian and best player nominee in the 1998 World Volleyball Championship, will oversee Sports Coordination; Virginia Ramírez, gold medal in hockey in Barcelona 92, will be assisting CEO Victor Sánchez.

The new logo branding of the iconic Alcala Gate which is one of the oldest royal gates to the city dating back in the 16th century, brings together past, present and future merging the symbolic five arches as continents. Peiret won a 6,000€ prize for the design to go towards his graphic training.

Bid ceo, Víctor Sánchez, said, "This is the bid’s philosophy – a commitment to young people. We want to collaborate in the recovery of all values that have always been attached to the sports world and to the Olympic Movement."

Madrid is in the race with Baku, Doha, Istanbul, Rome, and Tokyo to host the 2020 summer Games. The final vote will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 7, 2013.
