TAMPA/SOCHI: The PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee Olympic Games (POCOG) representatives made their first official presentation to the European Olympic Committees (EOC) updating them on the works already underway in the South Korean alpine area.
Asia with PyeongChang 2018 will host the winter Games exactly two decades after Nagano 1998 was held in Japan.
POCOG was represented on behalf of president Jin Sun Kim by Dong Hoo Moon, vice president and secretary general, and South Korean National Olympic Committee (KOC) chief and vice-president of the OCOG, Yong Sung Park.
Both delegates addressed the assembly and showed two presentations about the overall plan and venue explanations. The appointment made four months and 18 days since the IOC’s historic announcement in Durban, South Africa, on July 6th.
After the dissolution of the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee last month on October 5th, POCOG was inaugurated on October 19th with 116 members, including 22 executive committee members.
Apart from Park and Moon, the executive committee includes vice-presidents: Gangwon Governor, Moon-Soon Choi, Kwang Sik Choi (Minister),Yong Sung Park (KOC President), Seok Yong Yoon (KPC President), and Jae Youl Kim (Korean Skating Federation President).
Board members include: Dae Sung Moon (IOC Member), Jee Chul Oh (POCOG Vice Chairman), Ki Hong Kim (Director, Culture And Sports Ministry), Jong Jun Choi (Secretary General, KOC), Tak Byun (Korean Ski Federation President), Myung Hee Choi (Gangneung City Mayor), Seok Rae Lee (Pyeongchang Mayor), Seung Jun Choi (Jeongsun Mayor), Jong Min Kim (Chief Of Gangwon Development Organization), Kwang Bae Kang (Olympian), Yuna Kim (Olympian), Joing Young Lee (President, Korea Sports Education).
Within a short space of four months, POCOG organized an IOC Orientation Seminar last August, which was led by Gunilla Lindberg, Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission, and Olympic Games Executive Director Gilbert Felli.
They also recently held their first executive board meeting in Seoul and all 22 members were present.
The committee has also started working closely with the IOC concerning the Games Master Plan, through a series of conference calls and relevant meetings related to the Olympic Games Knowledge Management (OGKM).
Next March, the IOC Coordination Commission will make its first inaugural site visit to PyeongChang.
Moon said, “I also wish to reassure the IOC and the members of the EOC present today, that we, the PyeongChang Organizing Committee, will spare no efforts in delivering one of the most memorable Winter Games ever.
“We will study the best practices of past Winter Games, and to this end, we solicit the kind support of not only the IOC, but also from the EOC.
“Europe organized the first-ever Winter Games back in 1924, and have staged 13 Games to date.
“In less than three years’ time, the beautiful city of Sochi will play host to the global Olympic Family.
“In short, you are the perfect role model for us,” he concluded.
