TAMPA/ROME: The Rome 2020 bid for the Olympic Games gets a strong boost by the launch of the “GiovaniRoma2020” (“YouthRome2020”,YR2020) association this week in the Eternal City to support the bid committee.
Backed by the Province of Rome, the youth movement will have a strong web presence and utilize social media. It also aims to reach out through educational channels such as the schools and universities with Olympic education to spread awareness.
Presenting the news at the press conference were: Roma 2020 president, Mario Pescante, Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) head, Gianni Petrucci, Italian Paralymic Committee chief, Luca Pancalli, president of the Province of Rome, Nicola Zingaretti, head of sports for Rome 2020, Jury Chechi, the regional assessors for the Schools and Sport, Tourism and Politics, Paola Rita Stella e Patrizia Prestipino and the president of the YouthRome 2020 association, Benito Malaspina.
Bid leader and IOC vice-president, Mario Pescante, who has always been an advocate for the youth and a lecturer at the university, said, ”I have had a chance to meet these young people and have also been able to get to know about forty of them. This project was launched by the teachers.
“Now we will hold a kind of assembly: they want this to be an Olympics of human scale that goes back to traditional values, and Rome is the ideal place, because of the legacy of the ’60 Games, rich with the athletes’ stories that are still being remembered.
"I think that Rome as a city, historically and culturally, has this message in its DNA. If this message is passed on by the youth, talking to other young people, they will make them understand that this is a fight to give back the right values to the Olympics."
CONI chief, Gianni Petrucci added, “This is an initiative that we share. Furthermore we have an extraordinary relationship with the school system and I am sure that it will continue with the new minister of education. When you talk about the Olympics it is all about this. We know very well that the country's problems are more important than sports, but the Olympics are beyond the sports,” he concluded.
Pescante was the former secretary general of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) together with current IOC President, Dr. Jacques Rogge, who served as president, and both were behind the start of the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF). Rogge consequently has also launched the Youth Olympic Games (YOG).
Rome is running against Baku, Doha, Istanbul, Madrid, and Tokyo to host the 2020 summer Games. The final decision will be taken in 2013 at the IOC session in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
