TAMPA: As the final days of the bid campaign for the 2017 IAAF World Championships wind up to the decision on Friday November 11th, the Qatar government announced today their full support for the Doha bid.

Doha is running against London to host the high profile athletics event which will make a strong statement about their 2020 campaign to host the Olympics. Qatar already has won the 2022 FIFA World Cup and is on a mission to bring more world level events to the Middle East.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and the Heir Apparent, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, issued a statement via the Qatar News Agency, QNA, confirming the total backing for the athletics bid.

He said: "The Doha bid for the 2017 IAAF World Championships has the full and absolute support of the Government and the people of Qatar.

“Sport is central to our national vision and we want the great sport of Athletics to have new opportunities in our country and in the Middle East.

"Our team has put together a great bid with many creative and unique features. Doha's bid guarantees certainty, innovation and a platform for Athletics to reach new fans, a dynamic region and an exciting new market for the sport's most important event,” he concluded.

Several high level events have already been hosted in Doha such as the Asian Games in 2006, the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 2010 and this year's Pan-Arab Games will be held in December 2011.

The IAAF Council will vote in Monaco this coming Friday on the outcome for host city.
