TAMPA: According to news in the Azerbaijan press the Russian NOC executive director, Marat Bariyev, has spoken out in favor of the country supporting the Baku bid for the 2020 summer Olympics.

He confirmed that the Russian NOC is working with the Baku bid colleagues and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Minister to help them with their bid plan.

Bariyev noted that Russia has good experience with bids for high level events and bringing the Games to Baku would be advantageous to Russia as they are a neighboring country.

He has advised them that they have the sports infrastructure and a growing economy and that basically they need to promote the city and its capabilities on a world wide level and spread awareness.

Baku is in the running for the 2020 Games together with Doha, Istanbul, Madrid, Rome and Tokyo. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will vote the final host city on September 7th in Buenos Aires at the IOC session.
