MONACO: The fifth international forum for athletes concluded today in Colorado Springs with IOC president Dr. Jacques Rogge listening to the final recommendations of eight working groups.

Their recommendations will be put before the IOC executive board for final approval.

At the forefront of their recommendations was the request that athletes ‘convicted of a deliberate and aggravated doping offences should receive a lifetime Olympic ban’.

And on the heels of this one was that that ‘coaches doctors and any other members of an athletes’ entourage found to be taking part in illegal doping practices must be convicted and sanctioned.’

Chairman of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, Frankie Fredericks, said ‘It is important to take note of the strong and growing voice that athletes have in the Olympic movement.

“‘We are right to put the athletes at the centre of our activities and we should take action when they speak so clearly and powerfully on topics that crucially affect them.”

The Athletes’ representatives reported back on a series of topics: Athlete’s Entourage (those surrounding and advising athletes including coaches and doctors); Communications and Social Media; Athletes’ Career Programme; Health Safety and Security of Athletes; Anti-doping ; Betting and Gambling; Games Time Experience; and on the Athletes Commissions themselves.

In regards to the athletes’ entourage the group called for the size of the accompanying persons to be controlled according to the event, and for the entourage to be held to facing investigation and sanctions if their athlete comes under the radar for investigation.

The IOC Athletes’ Forum is made up of representatives from commissions from the Ifs, NOCs, IPC, the continental associations and WADA.
