TAMPA/DOHA: Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, heir apparent and International Olympic Committee (IOC) member, was announced today as the leader of the 2020 Olympic bid to host the summer Games.

Sheikh Tamim is also head of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and served as chairman of the successful 2006 Asian Games which had the full participation of all 45 NOCs in the Asian region. He also holds the position of President of the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee and is in charge of executive operations of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Doha bid for the 2016 Games but fell out of the short list due to a request to change the date of the Games. Since that bidding cycle the IOC has changed their bid rules to allow for modifications if requested in the initial phase of the bidding cycle. Doha successfully proposed to host the Games in late September to early October to deal with rising temperatures in the area.

Sheikh Tamim said in a statement: “I am very happy with the decision of the IOC executive body; this removes the climate barrier for nations hoping to one day host the Olympic Games, be it Winter or Summer.

“We have listened and learned following our previous bid and a significant amount of work has taken place to develop hosting plans that will ensure ideal conditions for athletes, fans and officials.

“Our aim is to deliver a great Games, new opportunities for Olympic sports and a legacy strategy that will have a profound impact not just within Qatar, but right across the Middle East and beyond.

“The exciting opportunity that lies before us is to demonstrate to the IOC that Doha as a potential Host City offers something that is unique, spectacular and compelling for the whole Olympic Movement.

“This is about sport, lifestyle, the potential for change and building a new understanding in the region and among the wider international community. I and my bid team will work tirelessly to deliver those goals as we hope to realise an historic moment for the IOC and the Middle East in September 2013.”

Given his leading role in both the 2022 World Cup and now heading the bid this allows for a synergy between the two projects.

Doha is running against Baku, Istanbul, Madrid, Rome, and Tokyo to host the 2020 summer Games. The bid proposes a chance for the Olympic Movement to advance into the Middle East to hold the Games for the first time.

All six bid cities will be in Lausanne, Switzerland in early November for a specialized bidding seminar staged by the IOC.
