TAMPA/LONDON: The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) reports that demand for Paralympic tickets has hit a new high as 116,000 people applied for 1.14 million tickets between 9 September and 26 September 2011.

International Paralympic Committee (IPC) chief, Sir Philip Craven, said, “The response from the public for Paralympic Games tickets has been phenomenal. To have over a million tickets applied for 11 months out from the Games is unprecedented and underlines the growing excitement for what will be a tremendous sporting event. This will be the first time ballots have been held for a number of sports, and I could not be more thrilled.”

Of the 300 ticketed sessions 126 are oversubscribed in at least one price category for the following sports: Archery, Athletics, Boccia, Track Cycling, Equestrian Dressage, Football, Goalball, Judo, Rowing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Fencing, Wheelchair Rugby, Wheelchair Tennis and the Olympic Park Day Pass.

Paul Deighton, LOCOG ceo, added, “We are absolutely delighted by the response to Paralympic Games tickets and we would like to thank the British public.  The UK’s love of sport and support for the Paralympic movement shows that they have taken the Games to their heart.

“When the Paralympic Games come home next summer we can look forward with confidence to packed venues cheering on our athletes.”

LOCOG is in the process of finishing the postal applications that have been received before the ballots are taken in the oversubscribed price categories. Then payments will be taken on October 31st and notifications on successful applications will be sent out on November 18th.

In December the remaining Paralympic tickets, including Olympic Football, will be open for sale on a first come first serve basis. In spring of 2012 contingency tickets for the Olympics and Paralympics will go on sale also.
