TAMPA: SportsFeatures.com looks around the world to compare the six 2020 summer Olympics bid cities from a travel point of view and we start with Baku, Azerbaijan.
Despite being tucked away in a relatively unknown part of the world, Baku is a treasure worth exploring.
Baku is the political and economic center of Azerbaijan, but it has also been designated an Islamic Culture Capital for its rich Islamic heritage.
UNESCO has recognized the Shirvanshah’s Palace and Maiden Tower, two of Azerbaijan’s best vestiges of ancient dynasties, as World Heritage Sites.
The city has a unique and diverse appearance because of the use of various European architectural styles, giving rise to its nickname, the “Paris of the East.”
The Old City of Baku is a wonderful array of walls, towers, and mosques still standing from centuries ago.
However, the city is also modernizing itself by demolishing old Soviet buildings along the Baku Bay in favor of parks and beaches.
Plus, Baku is making a name for itself as one of the hottest party cities in the world.
Baku might not be a sporting powerhouse, but it has hosted gymnastics and wrestling world championships and has a wide variety of professional sports programs.
The Baku Olympic Stadium is already under construction and should be completed by 2015, in plenty of time for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
