DURBAN, Jul 06: The senior officials of the PyeongChang 2018 met with the IOC and the press to sign the host city document and express their jubilation at the news that their third bid attempt had finally brought the Games back to South Korea.
The host city contract lays out legal, commercial and financial rights and obligations of the IOC, the Host City and the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and formalizes the agreement.
IOC president, Dr Jacques Rogge, said, “Congratulations to PyeongChang and thank you to Munich and Annecy. But I think that there is a lesson in the achievement of PyeongChang that patience and perseverance have prevailed.
“To Annecy and Munich they brought a lot of good ideas and creativity, they were not rewarded this time but maybe there will be a second time and I hope to see them back in a bid in the future.
Ceo Yang Ho Cho said, “I had some confidence but I did not expect this number 63. I believe all the IOC members did understand our message of ‘New Horizons’ and they believed this is the right time, right place and right now.”
Cho also confirmed that the members of the bidding committee will be included in the organizing committee and that they would be included in the planning process.
PyeongChang won the race to host the winter Games with the final tally coming out to 63 votes to Munich 25 and Annecy 7.
