DURBAN, Jul 06: Third time charm the Korean mountain winter sports village of PyeongChang has won the vote to host the Olympic winter Games and Paralympics.
This third consecutive bid the program seemed to have touched all cords in just the right way as the bid message invited the IOC to open the way to expand winter sports in Asia.
The bid team led by ceo Yang Ho Cho will hold a press conference with the IOC immediately following the announcement.
PyeongChang lost the 2010 Games to Vancouver, Canada in 2003 and then the 2014 Games to Sochi, Russia in 2007.
Salt Lake City, United States (2002) and Turin, Italy (2006) are the only two cities since 1988 that have won the Games on the first round of votes.
Sion, Switzerland ran against both cities and was widely viewed as the favorite in 1999 when Turin edged them out at the last minute to win 53 votes to 36. Salt Lake City carried 54 votes over Ostersund with 14, Sion with 14 and Quebec City 7 votes.
