TAMPA/PYEONGCHANG, Jun 27: IOC member Dae-Sung Moon started the Olympic celebrations in Seoul Olympic Park by lighting a special PyeongChang 2018 torch from the Seoul 1988 Olympic Flame.
Olympic bobsledder and PyeongChang 2018 sports director, Kwang-bae Kang, together with Vancouver 2010 medallists Yoon-Gy Kwak and Jung-Su Lee ran a relay with the torch to light a symbolic PyeongChang 2018 cauldron to highlight the support for the bid to bring the winter Games to Korea.
Members of the bid committee, athlete ambassadors and runners gathered together to enjoy the day commemorating the anniversary of the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) June 23rd.
Bid ceo, Yang Ho Cho, said, “The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Bid Committee is delighted and honoured to have participated in the Olympic Day event – a true celebration of the IOC and the values of Olympism.
“This Olympic Day Run in Korea demonstrates our country’s commitment to the Olympic Movement and we want to highlight with our bid, and our ‘New Horizons’ vision, how we can now help connect the Movement with millions of new, young hearts and minds across Asia.”
Following the opening flame ceremony 2018 runners participated in a 5,000 meter and one kilometer Olympic Day run to show commitment to Olympism and the bid for the winter Games.
PyeongChang is campaigning in the race to host the 2018 winter Olympics and Paralympics against Annecy and Munich. The final vote will take place July 6th in just 8 days at the IOC session in Durban, South Africa.
