TAMPA/HAMBANTOTA, Jun 24: The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) evaluation commission for the 2018 games heads to Hambantota, Sri Lanka on Monday for a four day perusal of the Indian Ocean island destination.

Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Hambantota 2018 co-chair and the governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, envisions the Games as a catalyst for sustainable economic, social and cultural development after the devastating tsunami in 2004.

Cabraal said, “We are looking forward to welcoming our friends from the CGF Evaluation Commission to Sri Lanka and the fast-developing Hambantota.  They will see how seriously we are taking our responsibility as a Candidate City in bidding for the honour of hosting what would be a truly life-changing 2018 Games.

“We have emerged from the conflict and have truly reconciled.  A Hambantota 2018 Games gives us the catalytic effect to bring about further positive change – to drive sustainable development throughout our unified nation.  Its benefits will be transformational in particular for our next generation; that’s what these Games – and our bid – are really about.”

The Hambantota bid is centered around the state-of-the-art Hambantota 2018 ‘Sports City’ which is already in stages of development and will contain 90 percent of the facilities and venues being proposed for the 2018 games.

The commission will view the venues also from the sky as they are flown over the proposed areas. There are also a number of infrastructural enhancements already in progress namely a sea port and an international airport, a high capacity public transport system and a new road network are in the works.

On October 11th the evaluation commission will issue their report one month before the CGF general assembly in St Kitts and Nevis will vote on November 11th for the 2018 host city for the Commonwealth Games.
