Munich prepares for fan flight to Durban with Prime Minister and athletes

TAMPA/MUNICH, Jun 22: The Munich 2018 bid is planning a special flight for fans that will include Horst Seehofer, Prime Minister of Bavaria, sports ambassadors and hundreds of fans that will take supporters directly to the excitement of the vote in South Africa. Seehofer will join Christian Wulff, Germany’s head of state, and they will represent the strong backing on behalf of the government.

On the 5th of July, one day prior to the vote, the special Lufthansa plane will land in South Africa with 100 supporters, sponsors, partners and sports ambassadors to cheer on the Bavarian campaign.

Backing the bid will be 15 of Munich 2018’s 125 sports ambassadors, bringing with them the experiences of 51 gold, 13 silver and nine bronze Olympic and Paralympic medals. 

The fan group will enjoy a city tour and visit the Moses Mabhida stadium on July 5th after the arrival and then a Festival of Friendship will be held at the German House on the 6th in anticipation of the final vote.

The Munich 2018 delegation will be lead in Durban by bid chair and superstar Olympian figure skater, Katarina Witt, IOC vice-president, Olympic champion and head of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) Thomas Bach, and Bernhard Schwank, CEO of the Munich 2018 Bid Committee.  

Witt exclaimed how pleased she was at the prestigious group behind the German campaign. She said, “Munich 2018 has had a strong team working towards this day for two years now, and we want to show the immense support we have received from every echelon of society, especially the athletes, right up to the final day in Durban. We are delighted that so many sports ambassadors, partners and fans are coming to Durban to support us on site; this shows once again that we are truly a bid by athletes for athletes!”

Another well-known German Olympian and three time champion in luge, Georg Hackl, talked about his excitement to go to Durban and said, “I am thrilled to be one of 15 sports ambassadors supporting Munich 2018 in Durban. Munich 2018 is an athlete driven bid and this will be showcased once again by the strong support from numerous athletes who will be on the ground in Durban in the coming weeks.” 

Hackl is affectionately known in Germany as the "flying white sausage" however is a force to be reckoned with holding three gold and two silver Olympic medals.

Munich, Annecy and PyeongChang are the three cities in the running for the 2018 winter Games and Paralympics. The IOC will vote on July 6th after hearing the three cities’ presentations that day. IOC president, Dr. Jacques Rogge, will make the announcement later that day on live television.
