TAMPA/PYEONGCHANG, Jun 20: The PyeongChang 2018 winter Games bid received some extra support this weekend as the Korean Buddhist community held a special prayer service dedicated to the bid.

A large Buddhist service was held by the Korean Buddhist Jokye Order at the Taeneung National Training Center and there was an attendance of over 1,500 civilians and athletes. Monk Ja-seung, head of the Jokye Order, also attended the hope prayer service.

High level government officials were also present such as Byoung-gug Choung, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Gangwon Governor Moon-Soon Choi.

Bid ceo, Yang Ho Cho, said, “We are very grateful for the amazing support that people all over Korea, and from every community, have offered this bid. A Winter Games in PyeongChang will be for everyone and it would be an honour for us to welcome the world to South Korea in 2018.”

Other local religious initiatives are going on parallel to the Jokye Order service, and Woljeong-sa, the thousand year old Buddhist temple located in PyeongChang has even begun to hold four daily prayer sessions open to the local citizens to support the bid with their prayers.

A symbolic torch prayer service was hosted by the Gangwon Christian Association and Christians from 2,000 churches from all over Gangwon Province united in Chuncheon. The association has also been holding early morning services daily since May 28th for the locals to pay about their well wishes for the PyeongChang bid campaign.

PyeongChang is in its third bid to bring the winter Games to the Asian continent and is running against Munich and Annecy for the 2018 Olympics. The final decision will be voted on July 6th at the IOC session in Durban, South Africa.
