TAMPA/ANNECY: The Annecy 2018 expedition is set to arrive at iconic Mont Blanc today/Monday and unfurl the bid banner at an altitude of 4,810 meters. The project was postponed from the weekend because of bad weather.

A team of athletes from French railway company SNCF, an official supporter of Annecy 2018, have organized the expedition together with bid leader, Charles Beigbeder, his wife Carine Beigbeder, and Annecy Mayor, Jean-Luc Rigaut.

The SNCF team includes three snowboarders, Paul-Henri De Le Rue (Olympic medallist), Xavier De Le Rue (multiple world champion), Sylvain Dufour (medallist at the world championships) and cyclist Cathy Moncassin-Prime.

They will be backed up by climbing guides from ENSA, the French National Ski and Mountaineering School, and the historic company of guides of Chamonix and Saint-Gervais.

Beigbeder and Rigaut are using the expedition as a planning event as there are little over two weeks left in the 2018 bid race.

Beigbeder said,  “19 days before the International Olympic Committee’s decision, it is an honour to find myself in the company of athletes in Chamonix, the birthplace of winter sports and the Winter Olympics.

“I am proud to be taking part in this challenge alongside great champions, aiming to fly the flag for Annecy 2018 on the summit of Europe and demonstrate our desire to use these magnificent, authentic mountains for the benefit of Winter sports all over the world.

“Personally, it has also been an excellent opportunity for Jean-Luc Rigaut and myself to get together and plan for the final days of the campaign during which the entire team will be doing everything possible to convince the IOC that Annecy would offer the Winter Games the best and most nurturing home possible.

“I would like to thank the athletes and the SNCF for their support for this great initiative, in the spirit of our bid. For Games that are authentic, set in the heart of the mountains, designed by athletes and look to the future."

Annecy is vying against Munich and PyeongChang for the 2018 winter Games.

Next stop after this on the bid trail will be the ANOCA general assembly in Lume, Togo where the three bid cities will give presentations June 28th.

The final vote will be held in Durban, South Africa on July 6th at the IOC session.
