TAMPA/SEOUL, Jun 14: A special sport themed lighthouse has been erected to show support for the PyeongChang 2018 winter Games bid in the southern port city of Sokcho city in the Gangwon province.

The people in the Gangwon region are passionately behind the bid and the desire to give winter sports a more prominent place in society.

The concrete wall features a mosaic mural depicting sports in the Winter Olympics showing the graphics of a figure skater, ski jumper, speed skater, skier, and many others celebrating the animated atmosphere of the Games.

A 15m ski jump board is made of a concrete wall and stems from one facet of the lighthouse, which is in the shape of a 12m tall octagon.

The Donghae Regional Maritime Affairs installed the lighthouse at Seorak Port in Sokcho Sunrise Park to greet maritime visitors. The Port of Donghae is located on South Korea’s east central shores on the Sea of Japan in Gangwon Province.

There are plans to install a 3m tall sculpture of a ski jumper on the slope structure to further show the appearance of a ski jumping hill.

The Donghae Regional Maritime Affairs will be holding an opening ceremony in the next days once the structure is finished.

Thanks to Eungyeong Choi and Katherine Lee who contributed to this story.
