TAMPA/RIO DE JANEIRO, June 9: The three day International Olympic Committee (IOC) coordination commission visit concluded today overseeing the works in progress for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games with a general consensus that works were proceeding according to schedule.

Commission chair, Nawal El Moutawakel, said, "Over a year ago, at the end of our first visit, I said that time was passing by and we had no time to waste. Today I am happy to say that Rio 2016 and its partners have taken those words seriously and made remarkable progress."

She was also complimentary about the launch party of the new 3-D logo that was held on Copacabana Beach last New Year’s Eve.

"Besides having been a fantastic event, which highlighted the reputation of Rio as an attractive and fun tourist destination, I would like to commend the impressive logistical operation put in place for crowd control, security, cleaning and waste management. Within hours, Copacabana had returned to its original state, before many New Year's revelers had woken up," she noted.

El Moutawakel and the commission was accompanied by Gilbert Felli, IOC Olympic Games Executive Director, and they highlighted that the infrastructure and civil works are going forward and that the Brazilian government has endeavored to make airports a priority and that other means of transport are progressing well.

The agreement for the construction of the Olympic Village has been signed and the beginning of remodeling of some of the venues had begun and these were all good signs of progress.

The President of the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, told IOC members that "You have trusted us to hold memorable games.  I guarantee that we will honor your vote of confidence and make a historic contribution to the Olympic movement."

He also said: “I would like to acknowledge the partnership that the IOC Coordination Commission has established with us. Throughout the last year, the Commission has played a key role assisting Rio 2016, through the seasoned guidance of its members, to fulfil its many responsibilities. We believe that this collaboration with the IOC and our periodic meetings are fundamental to the successful organisation of the Games.”

One other point that the IOC noted that they were keeping an eye on was the relocation of residents from areas destined to have facilities built on and the issues related to this.

Overall the IOC was pleased that great strides had been made for progress and with the addition of golf on the Olympic program for Rio, the organizers had finalized the venue master plan five years early.
