LONDON, May 04:  David Beckham was on the team which helped win the 2012 Olympic Games for London and he harbours dreams of perhaps even playing as a member of the the Great Britain football team - if the BOA and the various home Football Associations can get their act together.

Whether he makes it as a player or not, the former England captain will be there on behalf of TOP sponsor Samsung for which he will be a 'global brand ambassador for London 2012.'

Beckham's role starts with immediate effect, involving appearances in adverts across several platforms and stepping out in the company's PR campaigns. Gyehyun Kwon, Samsung's vice-president and head of worldwide sports marketing, said: "David Beckham is a global sports icon who is helping to raise the profile of the London 2012 Olympics and attracting more of us to watch and to actively participate in the Games.

“He has been actively taking part in a number of initiatives to help young people around the world to enjoy a better life, while Samsung’s London 2012 marketing campaign will also place great importance on the value of engaging youth."

Over the past week Beckham has been busy commuting to and from the United States where he will shortly start the new Major League Soccer season with Los Angeles Galaxy. His current deal with Galaxy expires later this year but Beckham has said he has no intention of retiring ahead of London 2012.

He said: "We will see [about the Games]. Just to be part of the team would be incredible. Whatever happens, I can hardly wait to take my children to see some of the best athletes in the world performing at the highest level.

"I have been so proud to represent my country and be able to help bring the Olympics to the east end of London. It will be an amazing occasion."
