DOHA/HAMBANTOTA, Apr 29: The Hambantota 2018 Commonwealth Games bid gained more support from four Sri Lankan medallists to ensure that the campaign is targeted to be the “Athletes' Games”.

They have joined the Athletes' Commission working with the bid plan to focus on the needs of the athletes.

The athletes were: Pushpamali Ramanayake (Shooting), Commonwealth Games gold, Edinburgh 1994; Sriyani Kulawansa (Hurdles), Commonwealth Games silver, Malaysia 1998; Sugath Thilakaratne (400m), Commonwealth Games bronze, Kuala Lumpur 1998; and Chintana Vithanage (Weightlifting), Commonwealth Games gold, Melbourne 2006

Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Hambantota 2018 Organising Committee Co-Chair and Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, said: “These athletes bring their experience and passion to a bid that promises a compelling combination of tradition and excitement.

“Through the Commission they will help to drive our ‘Athletes Come First’ policy, ensuring all athletes will be welcomed by capacity crowds in iconic venues and with facilities that exceed their expectations.  Ultimately, it’s about enabling them to strive for personal best performances and medals.”

The Athletes’ Commission will also be researching ways and means to reach out to the youth. There is also a new seven-year National Sports Plan which is designed to work with the youth and children to promote sports and wellness.

Members of the Athletes’ Commission will accompany a high-level delegation in presenting the Hambantota 2018 official bid file in Kuala Lumpur on 11 May.  The Commonwealth Games Federation is due to choose the host city at its meeting in St Kitts and Nevis on 11 November 2011.
