LONDON, Apr 27: More than 20m applications for tickets were registered by 1.8m up by the early-morning deadline for sports fans wishing to attend the London 2012 Olympic Games. Organisers, delighted with the response, said the figure is more than three times the 6.6m tickets available in the UK.
More than 50pc of tickets for the 645 sessions will now go forward to a random ballot. LOCOG chairman Lord Coe said: "We're thrilled with the response. Certain events have seen massive demand - for example the Opening Ceremony, which is more than 10 times oversubscribed, so there will understandably be disappointment and we will find a way to go back to those people with other tickets.
"What is most encouraging is that the majority of applications are for multiple tickets and for several sports, which shows that friends and family are planning to go to the Games together."
The list of over-subscribed events include all sessions of track cycling, rhythmic gymnastics, triathlon, modern pentathlon, equestrian and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Most of the swimming and tennis sessions will also be ballotted.
LOCOG should thus hit its target of raising £400m from this stage, with up to another £100m of tickets to go on sale in further ballots later this year.
