LONDON/TAMPA, Apr 05: It has been a busy day for The Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) as they opened up SportAccord Convention with their General Assembly, talked about recommendations to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and announced their new council members.

ASOIF has asked WADA to cut the costs of drug testing because research has highlighted the differences in approach by federations and the costs that are incurred.

WADA has started to talk about cutting the B sample doping test in order to save money, especially since most A and B tests have zero difference in results.

WADA’s David Howman said, “People can go to jail over one positive drug sample, and sport is really on its own in collecting two samples.”

The ASOIF also elected new Council Members of ASOIF during the General Assembly:

- Marisol Casado – President of the International Triathlon Union (ITU)
- Patrick Baumann – Secretary General of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA)
- Dr. Hassan Moustafa, President of the International Handball Federation, was re-elected.

Bruno Grandi, President of International Federation of Gymnastics, and Bob Elphinston, President of FIBA, are both leaving the council.

Marisol Casado had this to say in a press release about being elected to the ASOIF:

"It is my privilege to be elected a member of the ASOIF Council.  There are 28 member summer international federations and the new role has the responsibility of strengthening the solid link among the summer IFs, the IOC and Organising Committees of Summer Olympic Games (OCOGs).

"I am committed to making this responsibility my duty and working even more closely with the members federations."

Baumann said in a release by FIBA today:

"I'm very honoured to take on this new role within the Olympic family. It is a special responsibility as my predecessor Borislav Stankovic was one of the founders of ASOIF and served it for nine years as a Secretary General.

"Also our past Presidents George Killian and Bob Elphinston served on the Council."

Moustafa also commented on being elected to the ASOIF Council:

"It is a great honour to be elected to the ASOIF Council. I am looking forward to working with the ASOIF Council and preserving the common interests and goals of the International Summer Olympic Federations.”
