LONDON/MUNICH, Apr 02: Thomas Bach is happy with an early date for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen referendum on Munich's bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games - and is confident that the outcome will be a resounding Yes.

Opponents and supporters of the bid in the winter sports centre at the foot of the Zugspitze - Germany's highest peak - have been winding up for the opportunity to resolve the issue one way or the other.

Bach, president of the German Olympic sports federation (DOSB) and vice-president of the International Olympic Committee, reacted with satisfaction to the local decision to hold the two referenda - For and Against - on May 8. This is two days before publication of the IOC assessment of the competing bids from Munich, Annecy and PyeongChang.

A positive outcome would be a perfect springboard for Munich when they and their rivals all present to the IOC little more than a week later on May 18 and 19.

Bach said: "It is good that a date for the referenda is now scheduled. I expect a convincing majority to vote in favour of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The initiators of the pro-Games referendum have collected the necessary number of signatures in a very short time.

"I am confident that the people of Garmisch-Partenkirchen will vote for the Olympic Games and thus for the sustainable development of their town. Representative polls show that Munich 2018 enjoys a level of support which cannot be found for any other major project in Germany."
