AIPS Congress urges world sport to help itself by helping the media

SEOUL: Ongoing concerns about the erosion of working conditions for sports journalists were voiced at the closing session of the 74th AIPS Congress in Seoul.
Immediate instances of concern to the international association of sports journalists were confusion over fees charged to radio broadcasters in the UEFA Champions League and internet charges being levied on the media at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Congress approved a resolution stating: “AIPS Europe recommends that AIPS requests consultations before UEFA regarding this matter and that the demands be withdrawn immediately.” It also requested that the Local Organising Committee for London 2012 waive its internet charging stipulation.
London's plans run counter to assurances given to Congress earlier in the week about unrestricted internet access from all three candidates (Annecy, Munich and PyeongChang) bidding to host the 2018 Winter Olympics and from FIFA over media facilities at the forthcoming Women's World Cup in Germany.
AIPS president Gianni Merlo said: “My No1 message has always been to protect the independence of the sports journalists and at the same time push for integrity within the field.”
The 2012 Congress will be held in Innsbruck, coinciding with the first Winter Youth Olympic Games.
