SEOUL, Mar 22: Gold medal ice skater Yu-Na Kim took the stage at the climax of the opening ceremony of this week's AIPS Congress in Seoul to offer a surprse welcome to representatives of the international journalism to South Korea.

The cancellation of the ISU Figure Skating World Championships because of the earthquake and the tsunami in Japan meant she flew home and was available to attend the opening formalties of the annual metting of the worlds sporting press.

Kim is also an athlete ambassador for the 2018 Winter Olympics bid from PyeongChang whose leaders, alojng with those from rivals Annecy and Munich will state their cases to the 250 AIPS delegates from 93 countries Wednesday.

Earlier the AIPS executive committee endorsed a $20 000 donation from the association's solidarity fund to the families affected by the disaster in neighbouring Japan in which more than 18,000 people have died.

AIPS presdient Gianni Merlo said: “We hope that our small donation can help make a difference to the people of Japan. Sports as usual has been affected with several sporting events cancelled and we hope this can help in the humanitarian crisis.”
