LONDON/SEOUL, Mar 20: All three candidates to host the 2018 Winter Olympics step up the pace of their round-the-world campaigns this week in Seoul at the annual congress of AIPS, the international sports journalists' association.

Senior representatives of the bids from Annecy, local PyeongChang and Munich will be addressing more than 250 delegates from 126 nations on Wednesday. They will go on to the Oceania Olympic congress in New Caledonia, SportAccord next month in London and an IOC presentation summit in Lausanne in May.

The IOC decides on the 2018 host in Durban on July 6.

AIPS Congress this week will also see the participation of leaders from major international sporting federations and organizations including the IOC, FIFA, FIG, FISU and the organizing committees of the London 2012 Olympic Games, Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games, Daegu World Athletics Championships and the Universiades of Shenzhen, Kazan and Gwangju.

Risto Nieminem, president of the World Lottery Association will speak on the topical issue of sports integrity and illegal betting.

President's warning

Gianni Merlo, Italian president of AIPS, said: "With a new media forum and the section dedicated to illegal betting - the real danger to the future of sport - this year’s programme should be educational, thought-provoking and stimulating.

"Our profession is constantly changing and evolving and we must keep up with technology as well as with issues which can kill sport and therefore our jobs.”

The five-day congress runs from Tuesday to Friday. It is supported by the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korean Olympic Committee and will be hosted by the Korean Sports Press Union at the COEX Convention Centre.

The AIPS executive committee and as well as continental sections from Africa, Americas, Asia and Europe will meet ahead of the official opening.
