Now Qatar wants to attract the World Athletics Championships

LONDON/DOHA: Qatar - its bidding confidence enhanced by its success in landing football's 2022 World Cup finals, wants to host the IAAF World Athletics Championships as comparatively soon as 2017.
The Gulf statr's Olympic Committee, in cooperation with the Qatar Association of Athletics Federation, is proposing what it claims to be an "innovative event concept" which would strengthen the sport, the World Championships and the IAAF as an organization.
Support for the IAAF would assist it promote track and field around the world, especially in new regions including the Middle East and into Central Asia.
A spokesman said: "Should Qatar be awarded the event, we will work in full cooperation with the IAAF and other member federations to share best practice in Athletics and jointly create development programs, which will increase and encourage more participation and even more attention for athletics as a sport.
"After the success of the IAAF World Indoor Championships Doha 2010, Qatar hopes to remain a valued partner in continuing the success of Athletics with a new start for the World Championships in these times of rapid changes that demand constant improvement and development."
