Spain, Nadal and Vonn carry off 2010 world sport awards from Laureus

ABU DHABI, Feb 07: World Cup-winners Spain, Rafael Nadal and Lindsey Vonn were the most high-profile winners at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Abu Dhabi.

Spain took the team award, Nadal the Sportsman of the Year prize - after winning Grand Slam events at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open - while Vonn collected the Sportswoman title on the strength of winning her third successive skiing World Cup and Olympic downhill gold.

German sport celebrated two Awards. Golfer Martin Kaymer won the World Breakthrough of the Year award after winning the US PGA Championship and finishing as No1 golfer in Europe while visually-impaired skier and biathlete Verena Bentele landed the Disability Award after capturing five gold medals in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

American Kelly Slater won the Action Sports Award for the third time, after winning a record 10th World Surfing Championship, while acclaimed for the Comeback of the Year was Italy's seven-times motor cycle world champion Valentino Rossi, who returned to the track just 41 days after breaking his leg.

Another football success was registered for France's Zinedine Zidane, who received the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his remarkable career, while the Spirit of Sport Award was presented to the European Ryder Cup Team to mark their win over the United States in October.
