SEOUL, Feb 02: A regional poll has revealed that public support for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games bid continues to increase. The poll, conducted by a Gangwon regional newspaper, Gangwon Ilbo, reported 95.2pc of people surveyed as wanting the Winter Games to come to Korea for the first time in the country’s history.
The figure is an increase on the 93pc of regional residents who pledged support to the bid in a 2009 poll. The new poll was conducted by phone over the course of four days from December 28-31.
In addition to widespread public support, a host of private companies are joining together to help promote PyeongChang’s bid across the country.
The Council of Private Organisations for the PyeongChang 2018 Bid is a new national committee with members that represent a broad range of Korean industries including broadcasting and transport. The committee is chaired by Ki-young Uhm, PyeongChang 2018 Vice-Chairman and former president of MBC Broadcasting, a national Korean broadcast network.
To encourage further support for PyeongChang’s bid, the committee will use its member networks to showcase the bid and collect one million signatures from the public, highlighting the nation’s ongoing commitment to hosting the 2018 Winter Games.
Yang Ho Cho, PyeongChang 2018 Chairman and ceo, said: “It is wonderful to hear that PyeongChang’s bid for the 2018 Winter Games is supported by so many people in Gangwon Province and across the country."
The IOC decides between PyeongChang, Annecy and Munich in Durban, South Africa on July 6.
