TAMPA/PYEONGCHANG, Jan 21: The PyeongChang 2018 bid plan received a boost from the bid's sustainability research report today and reaffirmation of the environmental committee’s support.

The report, entitled 'Green Dream: O2 Plus Winter Games', was prepared by the bid's environmental committee and in partnership with distinguished environmental organizations, such as the Climate Change Research Institute of Korea.

Governor of the Gangwon Province, Kwang Jae Lee, said: "PyeongChang has the cleanest air and water in our country, and protecting this beautiful environment is a priority for our Winter Games Plan. I am firmly committed to ensuring that PyeongChang 2018 delivers on its promise to organise a sustainable Winter Games should we have the honour of being a Host City in 2018."

After the launch of the environmental report, Mr. Ki-jong Uhm, member of a local preservation movement called 'Our Home PyeongChang 21', read through a resolution on behalf of the environmental group. In this resolution the group will observe and help fulfill PyeongChang's plans to host a carbon-neutral Winter Games in 2018.

Uhm said: "On behalf of the organisations gathered today, I am happy to announce our backing of the bid's sustainability initiatives and to deliver our promise of support. We believe PyeongChang 2018's carbon-neutral Winter Games will be a lasting legacy for our next generation, and we are proud to be a part of that process."

Some highlights of the report were covered in the official bid file presented to the IOC last week. The full report will be made available to the IOC evaluation commission when they make their bid visit 16-19 February.

The report confirmed that the existing renewable energy facilities in the region can already provide 73.4% of the electric energy demand for a Winter Games.  It also mentioned that a new wind energy plant will be constructed to make the Winter Games self-sufficient with renewable energy in 2018.

Bid chair, Yang Ho Cho, said: "PyeongChang 2018 is dedicated to sustainable development, and I welcome the completion of our Environment Committee's special report on how we can deliver an environmentally-friendly Winter Games.

"I would also like to express my appreciation for the local conservation groups' support. Their backing highlights that we have developed a Winter Games Plan that exceeds the highest environmental standards."

PyeongChang is running against Annecy and Munich for the 2018 Olympic winter Games. The final decision will be voted in July at the IOC Session in Durban, South Africa.
