Nadal and Vlasic are voted best of 2010 by the world's sports media

LONDON/LAUSANNE, Dec 30: Rafael Nadal and the Croat high-jumper Blanka Vlasic have been voted 2010 top sports personalities by AIPS, the international sports press association - after a ballot undertaken by 515 sports journalists from 93 nations.

Nadal, who won three Grand Slams and three Masters in the year to regain his No1 tennis ranking, beat Barcelona and Argentina's Lionel Messi by 63 votes. Andreas Iniesta, Messi's Barcelona team-mate and Spain's World Cup-winning goalscorer, was third in the men's category.

Vlasic won both the 2010 world indoor and European titles among her successes in 18 out of 20 competitions this year. Runner-up was Lindsey Vonn, the United States' Olympic downhill gold medallist in Vancouver, with Belgium's Kim Clijsters third.

Spain's victorious World Cup squad were voted AIPS Best Team 2010 while the Best Press Facilities award went to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Staged across nine cities and in 10 venues, FIFA and the local organising committee provided free wifi internet at all venues and press centres for thousands of international and local media. Vancouver's Winter Olympics press facilities was second with Wimbledon third.
