TAMPA/PYEONGCHANG, Dec 17: The Gangneung Indoor Ice Rink has been approved for competition by the World Curling Federation (WCF) adding further assurance to the PyeongChang 2018 winter Games bid. The same venue hosted the 2009 WCF Gangneung Women’s Curling World Championship.

WCF president Kate Caithness gave the green light to the venue this week as the federation was in performing a venue inspection. Caithness also met with Dong-Geun Lee (Skip) and Soo-Hyuk Kim (Third), members of the Korean national Curling team. She also took the time to visit the snow and sliding facilities at the Alpensia resort area.

The visit comes at a good time just prior to the submission of the bid file to the IOC January 11th.

Bid chair Yang Ho Cho said, “I am delighted to hear that the Gangneung Indoor Ice Rink has been approved by the WCF. PyeongChang 2018 can now guarantee it has the necessary facilities to host a successful Curling competition should the IOC choose PyeongChang to host the 2018 Winter Games.

“The Gangneung Indoor Ice Rink is just one of our world-class winter sports venues that have already been developed as part of PyeongChang’s Winter Games Plan, and these outstanding venues will provide a lasting legacy for winter sport in Asia.”

The WCF has also just announced that they have approved changes to their qualification system for the Olympic Games. Pending IOC approval this will take immediate effect.

The new system sees a two-year point qualification period and a new Olympic qualifying event that was voted by the WCF member associations.

PyeongChang is in the bid race for the 2018 Olympics with Annecy and Munich. The final vote will take place in July at the IOC session in Durban, South Africa.
