TAMPA/SEOUL, Dec 10: South Korean prime minister hosted a special Government Support Committee meeting today reaffirming the total support on behalf of the government for the 2018 winter Games bid.
Prime Minister, Hwang-sik Kim, met with the Governor of Gangwon Province, Kwang-Jae Lee and 12 other ministers to discuss bid plans and the progress on the developing infrastructure set to be finalized in the candidature bid file to be consigned to the IOC next January 11th.
Kim said: “The South Korean government continues to pledge its full support to PyeongChang’s bid to host the 2018 Winter Games and we will continue our close relationship with the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee and the KOC as the campaign moves into the final months.”
Bid chair Yang Ho Cho was pleased with the continued support. He said, “On behalf of the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee, I am extremely grateful and pleased to hear of the continued governmental support for our bid. With the final few months of the campaign fast approaching, the Bid Committee is working hard to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games to Korea for the first time in its history.”
PyeongChang’s plan, should they be successful, is to develop the Alpensia Resort area as a Special Olympic Zone and it will play a major role in attracting winter sports tourism. Also a new Olympic train station will be built there that will facilitate access to the area.
PyeongChang is in the bid race with Munich and Annecy to host the 2018 winter Games. The final decision will be taken at the IOC session at Durban in July 2011.
