London's Olympic Stadium still a Spurs option despite athletics doubts

LONDON, Nov 20: Uncertainty over the long-term future of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium has only been maintained by a statement from Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy.
The north London club has come up with move-in proposals to rival those of ‘local’ West Ham United. However the Tottenham plan has come in for criticism over an apparent refusal to consider maintaining an athletics track capability.
Levy’s latest statement, in defence of the club's concept of moving east, has done nothing to allieviate those concerns since nowhere does he mention the athletics legacy.
London lacks a major athletics venue and maintenance of the Olympic Stadium, albeit in a capacity-reduced form, had been considered one of the sporting pluses of the Games hosting.
Levy’s statement is largely taken up in responding to criticism of the move from Tottenham’s historic home of White Hart Lane. He noted that the Olympic Stadium option was being considered because of funding issues connected with preserving English Heritage sites close to the club’s present stadium.
Considering the Olympic Stadium concept, Levy added: “This is a possible option for us and . . . was our original option five years ago.
“Much has been commented on us being a north London club potentially looking to move to east London – [but] the Olympic site is in fact less than five miles from our current stadium and will be served by the best possible transport infrastructure in London.”
