TAMPA/LAUSANNE, Nov 16: Australian IOC executive board member John Coates has been elected the new head of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) defeating Dick Pound from Canada. Pound has served as head of the World Antidoping Agency (WADA) for nine years and is an ICAS member.

Coates’ term will be 2011-2014 and he has served as vice-president for five years. His term begins January 1, 2011.

He succeeds Mino Auletta from Italy and is the third president since Judge Kéba Mbaye (Senegal) founded the organization which came into force in 1984.

Also elected for the ICAS were two vice presidents: Gunnar Werner (Sweden) and Michael Lenard (United States).

Coates is an attorney from Sydney and also is the head of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), IOC member and Council member of the International Rowing Federation (FISA).

The role of the ICAS is to arbitrate sports related disputes and is composed of 20 international attorneys specializing in sports legalities.
