PYEONGCHANG, Oct 1: PyeongChang's bid to host the 2018 Olympic Winter Games has received a new show of supportive strength from all 224 elected officials of Gangwon Province.

They gathered on Wednesday in Chuncheon, the provincial capital, to express their full support for the PyeongChang bid seeking to host a second edition of the Games in Korea.

The ninth annual Harmony Meeting sports event in Chuncheon was attended by politicians from the National Assembly, from the Provincial Assembly and from the Municipal Council in Gangwon Province. This marked the first formal meeting of Gangwon officials since the June elections.

Provincial Governor Kwang-Jae Lee hosted a meeting of the area’s 18 Mayors and County Governors who all promised full support for the bid campaign and preparations for the IOC Evaluation Committee visit which has been scheduled for next February.

They all recognised that hosting the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games would enhance the province’s growth - in line with opinion polls reporting that more than 91 per cent of the Korean population and 93pc in Gangwon support PyeongChang.

Yang Ho Cho, the bid chairman and ceo, said: “On behalf of PyeongChang 2018, I am delighted to hear the repeated and strengthened encouragement from the different levels of government as well as the passionate support that the Korean people have for our bid. As our campaign moves towards a new phase, we promise to work harder than ever in the coming months as we take our proposals to the wider Olympic Movement.”

The International Olympic Committee will decide between the competing bids from PyeongChang, Annecy and Munich during its 123rd Session in Durban, South Africa next July 6.
