LONDON/PYEONGCHANG, Sept 6: The seaside resort town of Gangneung hosted a classical music concert on the beach offering a preview of the potential PyeongChang 2018 cultural Olympiad.
Gangneung is venue site for the Coastal Cluster which will be hosting all the ice events should PyeongChang be successful.
The two hour concert held on Saturday at the Gyeongpo Lake Park was organized by Korean Air one of the main sponsors of the bid. Thousands turned out to hear conductor Hee-Tae Suh direct the Millennium Symphony Orchestra perform Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart, Wagner and Brahms.
Yang Ho Cho, chairman of Korean Air and ceo of the PyeongChang bid, said, “Gangneung is a wonderful place to visit and we are delighted that so many people this weekend enjoyed the concert and all the other cultural festivities.
“With PyeongChang’s bid for the 2018 Winter Games we want to show that the region’s beaches and city amenities provide excellent entertainment for visitors, and that our proposed Winter Games locations can be enjoyed by people in any season.”
This concert is part of a series of concerts to be held throughout the end of the year and this one is the first to be held outside of Seoul.
PyeongChang is bidding against Munich and Annecy to host the 2018 Olympic winter Games. The final vote will take place at the IOC session in July 2011 to be held at Durban, South Africa.
